I try to create a productive un-decidability by combining elements whose denoted and connoted meanings don’t sit well together. The pioneer’s act of tree-felling feels graphically violent when joined with the brutal poses of gangster movies; the traditional association of woman=nature suggests the destruction as self-destruction.

Meanwhile, black image masks shift our understanding of subject, object, and aggressor, so that framing both directs understanding and denies stable meaning. I am suspicious of what we feel to be natural. Our belief in “natural” creates the limits of what we question.
